A Kentucky Colored Convention Insists Upon a Division of Offices - An Atrocious Murder--The - The Affair Wrapped in Mystery.
CINCINNATI, November 23. - Joseph Harmes, an inoffending, respected German gardener, was shot and mortally wounded at his own house, seven miles west of the city, near Warsaw, at seven o'clock this evening, by a man representing himself to be Fred Kleaver, of this city. Kleaver is a baggage master on the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Railroad, and was in the city at that hour. This leaves the identity of the murderer a mystery. The motive is thought to have been to rob Harmes. When the shot was fired Mrs. Harmes ran and gave the alarm and the murderer ran away, but came back and shot Harmes again. Both balls entered the left temple, but being from a small pistol did not penetrate deeply. The neighbors are intensely excited. Two well dressed strangers had been seen walking along the road in the afternoon but were unknown to the citizens Harmes had lent about seven hundred dollars cash about five months ago, and it was thought he had got it back and was keeping it in his house. Harmes's wounds are considered mortal. No suspicion rests on Kleaver here, as it is thought he will clearly prove an alibi.
CINCINNATI, Nov. 26.--A - A convention of colored men of Kentucky met at Frankfort yesterday, and appointed delegates to the National Convention of their color which assembles at Washington December 9th. Many resolutions of an independent character were passed, and among them one asserting their right to an equal division of the offices with the white portion of the Republican party, and, if not granted, they would act with any party in future which would best secure that recognition. They also assert their right to sit as jurymen.
