The colored people of Texas in convention tion at Waco congratulate themselves on their progress, and yet when they intimate that retaliation may be resorted to by the colored people if the lynchings of the latter by the whites are not stopped they show that they have not reached the limit of progress by a long shot. If negroes had been lynched simply because they were negroes then the covert threat embraced in the resolution might be expected. But where lynch law has been resorted to the victim has been thought to be guilty of some heinous crime. There can be no apology for lynch law, and innocent whites and blacks have suffered by it. The diffi- difficulty under which the colored people seem to labor is that the colored people are apt to take up the affair of an individual and make it the cause of the whole race. The prosperity of the negro in the south is a matter of gratification to the whites. The foolishness of the negro in convention as- assembled is a matter of regret to the white people.
